door weRin

As facilitators, we delivered a personal development course entitled "In the Mirror" for 18 consecutive years for Local Govt staff.  We saw a whole generation shift from victim, 'public servant' mentality to 'I can make a difference' thinking. Much of what we learned from our facilitation has been applied to our LBC Challenge. The challenges listed in last month's blog PLUS the global challenges we all face have been handed a mirror by 15 year old Greta Thunberg at the UN COP24 Climate tallks last Dec.

We're IN and Tanglewood is beautiful beyond expectations. Now starts monitoring, assessments, and THINKING about building courage to look in-the-mirror and take action. Watch Greta put up the mirror to you. Is what you do and represent making the changes that are really needed "to make the world work"? Here are 4 big challenges we continue to face on our LBC Journey linked to a few choice Greta-comments. Watch the video to see the contexts for her message.

Earth

Earth: Shift Mindsets
"Until you start focusing on what needs to be done rather than what is politically possible, there is no hope. We cannot solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis."

Tanglewood generates more energy than we use, so we can charge a plugin electric vehicle and also offset the energy used to build the house. The crisis is way worse than just reducing petrol consumption.

Air

Air: Admit the True Cost of Sustainability
"We need to keep the fossil fuels in the ground, and we need to focus on equity. And if solutions within the system are so impossible to find, maybe we should change the system itself."

For Tanglewood we insisted on timber beams, even though the engineer wanted to use steel made by burning heaps of coal. Steel beams cost the climate 1200% more in carbon dioxide than timber beams.

Water

Water: Commit to Restorative Development
"You say you love your children above all else, and yet you are stealing their future in front of their very eyes."

Tanglewood is a long-term investment to reduce our carbon footprint and prove that by spending a little more time and money, we can leave a legacy future generations will appreciate.

Fire

Fire: No Time to Waste
"We have run out of excuses and we are running out of time. We have come here to let you know that change is coming, whether you like it or not.The real power belongs to the people."

We hope Tanglewood inspires others to shift mindsets, admit the true cost of sustainability, commit to restorative development, stop wasting time, and start changing together!
