Biophilia literally means LOVE OF LIFE, thus LOVE OF NATURE.

In the context of built environments, Biophilic design is a process that connects structure, people and Nature. Everything about a home, office, shelter of any kind, is designed to foster positive and respectful relationships - humans with each other and with Nature.

We've lived in Tanglewood for over a year, submitted documentation and have been site-audited. Our job now is to glean what we can from Tanglewood's success and grasp opportunities to advocate for biophilia as a guiding force in the new-normal building industry. It's crystal clear to us that biophilic design must be embedded in the build of any structure designed for human occupation. We were required to produce a "biophilic charter and action plan."  Very little information or guidance was provided so we got creative.  Result? A stressless, creative 2-year build and a stunning, safe, healthy home.  We believe that if biophilic design principles are applied early and holistically, the design and build industries will be better prepared for the inevitable next pandemic. Here's our chance to ensure millions are not forced to live, let alone isolate in unsafe, unhealthy structures and spaces.

Biophilic Design must be understood for its value as a way of being, thinking, designing and building. Yes, there are a growing number of stunning architecturally designed examples that inspire, however, until the concept becomes mainstream, biophilic design will continue to be a luxury for a few. The New Normal must be filled with affordable biophilic buildings and communities that work inter-dependently with each other and, most importantly, with Nature.

Consider the following Elemental actions as steps to prepare NOW for the New Normal and the next pandemic!

Earth

When we put up an umbrella to shelter from the rain, we're not fighting Nature, but living with Nature. We must learn to live with Covid-19 and set goals for a New Normal where we love life (biophilia) and the full diversity of Nature.
